His novel The Scarlet Letter published in 1850 ensures his permanentfame in literature. In this novel Hawthorne sets his story in 17th century AmericanBoston under the rule of Puritan magistrates. Explore womens inner world and theirfate by researching on Hester. Because of the unique background of family, politicsand religion, his novel portrays the distinctive characters. The interpersonal meaningis worth studying. This thesis is to explore the interpersonal meaning in The ScarletLetter from the perspective of function by illustrating, contrasting, analyzingsomething and so on. Though the analysis of the thesis, especially the characterizationof the protagonist Hester, it plays an important role for interpersonal function andtextual function to study interpersonal meaning. According to these theories, readerscan easily get the key clues of communication and make a better understanding of therelationships between the speaker and the listener including the attitude of speaker,emotion, values and so on. Hester, an adulteress, is cast off in the marginal place ofthe patriarchal society, but Hawthorne purposely put her in the center of his story,endowing her with a position of subjectivity. As to her disobedience and r
