Key words:ship design;Multidisciplinary Design Optimization(MDO;decoupling; approximation CLC number:U662Document code:A 1Introduction Traditional ship design follows the ship design spiral as shown in Fig.1[1].At each circle of the spiral,designers have to make lots of coordination tasks between subtasks.These coor-dination tasks are decided according to the designer’s experience,intuition or limited analyses and tests.Even after these coordination tasks are finished,the designers themselves cannot en-sure that the design is the optimal one.Usually,the design spiral brings a design that meets the requirements and is acceptable,but not the optimal one. The problem of ship design follows design spiral is similar to the problem that aircraft industry met in the past.In order to overcome this problem,a new optimization method was de-veloped in aircraft industry.In the1970s,the popular process of aircraft design was the Se-quent Subsystems Design.This process divided the design of aircraft into sequent subsystems, and then these subsystems were designed orderly by specialist of different disciplines with their best skill of each discipline.Because of the sequent character of this design process,it has ignored the
