His father was gentlemanly but unsuccessful in business. The First World War intervened his school life which proved terrible and he joined up the army. But the army career was a disappointment to him and he was discharged from the army in 1919. In the same year, he began to work on his first novel This Side of Paradise, which was published in 1920 and greeted enthusiastically. Despite some flaws, the novel is still read and enjoyed. His first collection Flappers and Philosophers appeared in 1920 which was lamented scarcely as satisfying. The second collection Tales of the Jazz Age?(1922) from which the Jazz Age, an important historical period of the United States, got its name. In 1922 Fitzgerald finished his third novel The Beautiful and Damned. It was a carefully-constructed novel describing the reckless merry-making life of young people. In 1925, he produced his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby in Paris. After this he wrote one more important book, Tender is the Night, and some collections of short stories such as All the Sad Young Men and Traps at Reveille. By 1937, he wrote some more short stories, stayed in a New York hospital for several months, and began to write The Last Tycoon, which he never finished. In 1940, at the age of 44, he died of frustration. After his death, some of his interesting writings were put together into a book entitled The Crack-Up. The Great Gatsby is considered Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. However, in 1925 no one predicted the eminence of the novel in the new century—not even Fitzgerald himself. The story of The Great Gatsby is a good illustration. Gatsby is a young guy from the Midwest. He falls in love with Daisy, a wealthy girl, but is too poor to marry her.
