Next Magazine Defendants: D1—The Next Magazine: published in Hong Kong, but has a readership in the Chinese community around the world D2—Cheng Kim Hung: editor of the Next Magazine D3—Wat Wing Yin: reporter of the Next Magazine China Youth Development V. Next Magazine The Plaintiff’s claim(1): The Next Magazine published a report relating to “Project Hope” in its Issue 202 about 21 Jan. 1994. From January to June 1994, the average circulation in Hong Kong was about 152,000 copies. The article relating to “Project Hope” can be found on the Issue’s cover, its editor’s introductory remarks and its contents page. China Youth Development V. Next Magazine The Plaintiff’s claim(2): The article was defamatory in the following manner : The cover headline asserted that funds accumulated by Project Hope to the extent of $70 million had gone missing The editor’s introductory remarks alleged that the charitable donations made to Project Hope had in fact disappeared: “卻發現大筆損款不知所蹤”(but found that a large sum of money was missing)﹑”…希望工程…在香港搞了兩年﹐…共損了七千萬元…但這七千萬無最后去了那里﹐卻仍然不清不楚“(Project Hope…has been promoted in Hong Kong for two years…the totally donation added up to $70million…but where did these $70 million go, no one knows) The context alleged the following: 1) charitable donations had disappeared: China Youth Development V.
