The evolution of ACUUS’s strategic vision for the sustainable future of global cities Dimitris Kaliampakos ACUUS President Future cities for “Belt & Road Initiative” and Urban Underground Space development and utilization （FUUS2019), 28-29 October 2019, Shanghai, China Associated research Centers for the Urban Underground Space – ACUUS ACUUS is an international organization promoting the underground development The core idea of “going underground” The systematic use of the underground space is a solution, maybe the last one, which can enhance the quality of life and boost competiveness of modern cities. • ACUUS is an international ‘think tank’ for the underground space • It is an international hub where geotechnical engineers, land-use planners, policy makers, non-governmental organizations meet in order to design a better future, especially for the cities. Two remarks on our strategy: it is not an “either or” question! • We support the integrated land use planning with full incorporation of the underground space, which current policies still neglects. • We now know that the surface cannot be sustainable without the underground. And vice versa.
