Strategicqualitymanagementisimplementedinalo-calelevatorcompany.Qualitystrategies,policiesandgoalsfocusingoncustomers′needsareclearlyestab-lished.Continuousqualityimprovementhasbeenadoptedasthecorporatestrategytoimproveitsperformanceandcompetitiveedge.Thispaperpresentsthesuccessfulim-plementationofaqualityimprovementprojectusingtheworkstudyapproach.Onthecompletionoftheproject,therateofseriousdefectswhichmayleadtoanaccidentisreducedby55%,i.e.,from2%～0.9%overaperiodoftwoyears.AtotalofHK＄1.1millionspentonthepro-jectisjustifiedwhencomparedwiththereductionoffi-nancialrisksinvolved.Thesuccessoftheprojectdemon-stratesthattheworkstudyapproachcouldbeaneffectivetoolforimprovingtheperformanceofmaintenancework.Keywords:qualitymanagement;qualityimprovement;

ableandsafeelevatorserviceisexpectedfromtheusers.Poorelevatormaintenancewillresultinfrequentfailurescausingalotofinconve-niencestotheusers.Inaworsecase,afailuremayleadtopassengers′injuriesorevenfatalac-cidents.In1996,thereare36registeredelevatorandescalatorcontractorsprovidingmaintenanceservicesinHongKong.Thesecompaniesareop-eratinginaverycompetitivemarket.
Thispaperpresentstheexperienceofalocalelevatorcompanyinusingstrategicqualityman-agementtoimproveitscompetitiveness.Aquali-tyimprovementprojectfeaturingtheuseoftheworkstudyapproachtoimprovingmaintenanceperformancewillbedescribed.Varioussuccessfactorsintheimplementationofstrategicqualitymanagementarealsodiscussed.
