The owner and manager of the company is my friend. The writer and filmmaker, Henry Smith, disagrees. (2) 在英语中，有些集体名词，如：army, audience, committee, community, company, enemy, family, government, group, jury, navy, public, staff, team等，其后既可用单数动词，也可用复数动词。一般来说，如果将这个集体看作是一个整体，动词用单数；如果把它看作构成该群体的若干个体， 则动词用复数。例如： The committee has decided to dismiss him. The government has taken action. Our family isn’t poor any more. My staff are all tall. (3) 表示百分数和分数的结构，如two thirds of, ninety percent of 等引起主语时，动词的数取决于of 后的名词或代词。例如： Over sixty percent of the city was destroyed during the war. A third of the students in this class are girls. Three-fourths of the surface of the earth is sea. (4) 由单位词加of构成的词组，如a pile of, a series of, a set of, a stack of 等引起主语时，动词通常用单数。例如： A pile of dirty clothes lies by the washing machine. A substantial portion of the reports is missing. (5) 一些表示数量的词语，如all of, half of, a lot of, most of, none of, some of 等引导主语时， 动词的数要与of后的名词或代词一致。例如： Most of the students are taking an active part in sports. Half of his work is done. Half of the books are novels. None of the furniture was wet. 两类特殊的复数名词，因为它们所指的东西总是由两部分组成，通 常都以-s结尾。如： 表示服装和其它穿戴的复数名词，如 glasses, jeans, overalls, pants, shorts(宽短裤), stockings, spectacles, sunglasses, trousers, underpants(内裤)等, 这些词通常要求跟随复数动词。例如： Jeans are worn by women as well as by men. Stockings come up to the mid-thigh and are usually held in place with suspenders. 指工具和其他器物的复数名词，如compasses, scissors, pliers, scales. clippers 等，这些词通常也要求跟随复数动词。例如; The scissors are in the upper drawer of the desk. He wore a pair of black trousers, which were a litt
