Three great tides between 1840 and 1860 1) First tide: the Westward Movement 2) Second tide: the contrast of two economic systems in the North and the South 3) Third tide: the growth of the working class 1) First tide: the Westward Movement a. Background: flood of new immigrants from Europe to USA from the early 1820s for better life. (500,000immigrants between 1815 and 1830) b. Reasons: Dissatisfied with the conditions in the Northeast; Hoping to find a more favorable environment on the frontier边境 c. Immigrants: landless farmers, jobless workers 2) Second tide: the contrast of two economic systems in the North and the South The North: the capitalist economy developed rapidly; industrial production advanced at an amazing speed; Transportation was greatly improved (canals and railway) By 1860, American industry had ranked fourth in the world.
