Immigrants: landless farmers, jobless workers 2) Second tide: the contrast of two economic systems in the North and the South The North: the capitalist economy developed rapidly; industrial production advanced at an amazing speed; Transportation was greatly improved (canals and railway) By 1860, American industry had ranked fourth in the world.
