INDUSTRY ANALYSIS FRAMEWORK -- A Global Perspective Automotive Components -- March 1995 (Source: Peter Van Hull, Automotive Segment Director) PURPOSE The purpose of the Industry Analysis Framework is to describe the fundamental forces driving an industry. It presents our auditors with a good framework with which to evaluate global industry risks and issues and, in turn, determine the applicability of these risks to specific clients. The Industry Analysis Framework accomplishes these objectives by: Presenting a brief description of the industry from a global perspective Discussing the critical elements of the Business Analysis Framework affecting the industry Presenting available global resources DESCRIPTION OF THE INDUSTRY The automotive components industry includes manufacturers of parts and accessories for cars; light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks; and off-road farm and construction vehicles, including metal stampings and castings; engine parts and systems; interior and exterior lighting, accessories, and trim; mechanical, electrical, and electronic parts, components and systems, molded plastic parts and equipment and rubber tires, parts and components. The industry comprises two sectors: The original equipment (OE) market - The strength of the OE market is directly linked to the health of the motor vehicle industry. Original equipment sales are ordinarily the backbone of the business for many large parts manufacturers, although most also are required to produce parts for the aftermarket. Aftermarket - Replacement parts are produced for vehicles of all makes and models. Although the size of the market is smaller relative to the OE market, the margins on replacement parts are much higher. Automotive component manufacturers usually specialize in a few items that require a high degree of skill and efficiency to manufacture.
