The Presenter of Life 1 One of the most loved people in Britain is David Attenborough. He is the voice for the prize-winning and enormously popular nature documentaries on BBC TV, and nearly everyone in Britain grew up watching him. 2 Though Attenborough is most well-known in connection with TV, in 1950 when he first applied to work at BBC, he did not own a TV and had only ever seen one TV programme. Thus, Attenborough wanted to be a radio producer, and he was surprised when he was hired to work as a TV producer instead. 3 One of the early programmes that Attenborough produced was Zoo Quest, about animals in the wild being captured for zoos. Because the intended presenter had taken ill, Attenborough replaced him at the last minute and became the presenter of the programme. Zoo Quest quickly became one of the most popular programmes on British TV, making Attenborough a household name. Though most of Attenborough’s work at BBC back then was behind the camera, in the years that followed he sometimes appeared on TV as a presenter. 4 Attenborough’s career at BBC grew until 1969, when he was put in charge of programming. However, he was not happy in this role, so in 1972 when he was put forward as a candidate to be the head of BBC, he decided to quit his office job and become a full-time writer and presenter.
