In-groups and Out-groups Hello everyone, today we are going to talk about Hall’s Culture Context ModelIn-groups and Out-groups. Now just think about this question: who will be the one you ask for help when you are in trouble? Will it be family members or friends? Or will you ask for help from a professional ? Let’s analyze the story of Xu Datong in the movie Guasha. When his son Dennis was taken away Xu Datong resorted to his friend John Quinlan who is not a professional lawyer on family cases just because they are long-term friend. How could we explain Xu Datong’s decision from intercultural perspective in terms of in-groups and out-groups? In order to answer all these questions first we should learn about the differences in regard to Groups between collectivistic culture and individualistic culture. Then we will talk about the relationship of in-groups and out-groups under Hall’s different culture contexts. As we have learned people make decisions by consensus in collectivistic culture. Each person’s social identity comes from their group memberships. While in individualistic culture each person is seen as autonomous and separate. Self is more important than group. Then what are the characteristics of individualistic cultures and collectivistic cultures in regard to groups? In Individualistic cultures, people have more groups, and they are not attached to any single group, because there are numerous groups to which they can be attached. People are more dependent on the successful and effective functioning of individuals rather than groups and they make fewer distinctions between in- and out-group.
