Analysis of Teaching Material The theme of this unit is “Languages Around The World”, and the topic of this section is about the Chinese writing system. The reading text mainly talks about the development and importance of the Chinese writing system, which is one of the factors that have helped Chinese culture survive. Written Chinese develops from a picture-based language carved on animal bones and shells, to a well-developed writing system, until now known as Chinese calligraphy. Its role changes from playing an important part in the development of Chinese civilization to becoming an important aspect of Chinese culture. It has become an important connection between the past and the present and an important tool of communication. Today, it even becomes a window for an increasing number of international students’ appreciating China’s culture and history. The author’s purpose in writing this text is to guide the readers to explore the history and importance of the Chinese writing system. The author not only introduces its development over the years, but also expresses her/his pride and confidence in Chinese culture by showing its importance in helping China’s culture survive and develop better. In the end, the author also talks about the great role that written Chinese will play in the future. Ⅱ. Teaching Aims: 1. To read about the development of Chinese characters. 2. To read the text using skimming and scanning. 3. To talk about other Chinese art forms except calligraphy. Ⅲ.
