America and China: A History of U.S.-China Relations since 1784 ? Instructor ? Associate Professor of History Craig N. Canning received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University in history. His principal teaching and research interests are in modern Chinese history, East Asian civilization, and in Sino-American relations. He has offered a wide range of courses on East Asia and the histories and literatures of China and Japan since joining the History Department in 1973, and he was awarded the Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award in 1981. As Associate Director of the Wendy and Emery Reves Center for International Studies from 1990-98 (Interim Director in 1998-99), he helped build a distinctive program in International Studies at William and Mary. Professor Canning travels frequently to China and East Asia, and spent the 2000-2001 academic year in China on a Fulbright grant serving as Director of Research and Development for the Hong Kong-America Center and as a visiting scholar in the Department of History at the ?
