Unit 10 Dialogue Text Supplementary Reading Translating Skills 10 Dialogue Topic Induction: Tom and Mary are now paying a visit to the Tool Room of the School factory. Stephen Barter, an old master comes over and shows them around. Barter: Hello, everyone, you are welcome to this tool room. The tools, devices and all kinds of simple machines that your see, are free for you to touch. While visiting, you can ask me any questions. Now, come along with me and let me show you around. Tom: Mr. Barter, look at the saws. Why are the two saws different both in shape and size? Dialogue Barter: Oh, I see. You know, the bigger one near you is called a handsaw. It is usually used by a carpenter for cutting wood. The other one over there is named a hacksaw. It is used for sawing metal pipes or ceramic tiles. A hacksaw is different from a handsaw because it is adjustable. Mary: Mr. Barter, how interesting to see all those wrenches! They are so many kinds and quite different in size and use. Barter: You’re right. They are various both I size and look because they are used to do different things. You see, this is a 6-inch wrench. It is used for tightening furniture bolts, toilet bolts and the like. They are unadjustable. Dialogue You have to use them when you repair your bikes. That one over there is a 10-inch wrench. It is adjustable. You can use an adjustable wrench in repairing a car. Tom: Mr. Barter, I like the drills hanging over there. It seems to me that a drill, especially an electric one, is so much different from a screwdriver. It can move so fast like a machine. Barter: That sounds reasonable. You can call a drill a simple machine for it can produce a movement and work on something else. Tom: Excuse me, Mr. Barter, may I ask you which of these tools we will use most often? Dialogue Barter: It’s up to the work you’re going to do. Actually, a mechanic must be good at using all kinds of tools here you see. Tom & Mary: Thank you, Mr. Barter, we
