Norman Cousins Cultural Background Text Analysis Writing Skill Questions on the Text Language Points Exercises Discussion Culture Background About the author Norman Cousins (1912- ), U.S. editor and author, is one of the most influential magazine editors of the 20th century. He was editor of the Saturday Review from 1940 to 1971. He was a powerful advocate of world government. His publications include: Modern Man Is Obsolete (1945), Talks with Nehru (1951), and his autobiography Present Tense: An American Editor’s Odyssey (1968) YMCA: abbreviation of Young Men’s Christian Association, an international organization that promotes the spiritual, social, and welfare of young Christians. Walter Lippmann (1889-1974). U.S. journalist and political philosopher, was known for his writings on current social and political events and phenomena. His widely syndicated column “Today and Tomorrow” for the New York Herald Tribune (纽约先驱论坛报) was read by millions from September 1931 until his retirement in 1967. Text Analysis The essay is basically an argument. Usually, in an argument, the author’s position is presented at the beginning of his writing and then he goes on to support it in various ways. Or the author may present his argument at the end of his writing as the result of logical inference. But Cousins used neither way. He presented his thesis statement in the middle of the essay. (para. 9). So the essay can actually be divided into two parts. Part 1(para.1-8) Cousins leads his readers to the conclusion. (thesis: the responsibility of the news media is to search out and report on important event) He begins with a question: Why are the newspapers and TV news programs so disaster-prone (para. 3)?The answer is drawn from the definition of news (paras. 4-6). Then he points out that positive events are also news and should be covered by the media. (paras7. 8) , thus
