PAGE PAGE 1 Unit 6 An old man tried to move the mountains. Section B Hansel and Gretel Analysis of the Teaching Material [What] The topic of this unit is legends and stories. Hansel and Gretel is a reading part in this unit. It’s an excerpt from Grimm’s Fairy Tales.The text type is a play.It aims to get students to know the elements ,the structures and the plots of the play. Through learning, students will act out the play vividly, get some good personalities from Hansel and know how to be a strong-willed person. [How] Hansel and Gretel is a play.The structures of a play are background,beginning, development, climax and ending. However, there isn’t an ending in this play. In the background, it tells us who,where,when and what happened. In the beginning, Hansel made the first plan to save himself and his sister. They came back home successfully. In the development, Hansel made the second plan. However, the birds ate the bread. In the climax, the children got lost,but they saw a wonderful house made of bread cake and candy. [Why] According to the play, it shows main characters ’s personalities. For readers, they are supposed to be like Hansel.Be brave to face difficulties and be smart to find ways to solve problems. Analysis of the students The students from Grade 8 are familiar with the topic and interested in fairy tales.The problems for them are the elements and the structures of the English play,the understanding of the plots and the analysis of characters’ personalities.After learning,students will get a better understanding of the play and act it out . Teaching Objectives Language competence: Master the new words and target language: wife, husband, shine, bright, ground, lead, voice, brave Unless he left the children to die in the forest,the whole family would die.
