Contents Reputation One of the greatest English poets of the 19th century. Along with Lord Byron and P. B. Shelley, he was one of the key figures in the second generation of the Romantic movement. A sensuous poet (给人以美的享受的诗人) In his short life, he influenced many English poets ,and his vivid imagery and sensual style had an impact on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood(拉斐尔前派). 1795 John Keats was born in London , the son of a livery-stable keeper. 1803 when Keats was eight, his father was killed . He began his career as a surgeon’s apprentice ,but gave up medicine for literary pursuits in 1814. Keats had a famously intense love affair with Fanny Brawne ,to whom he was engaged but never married. In 1821, he left England and went to Italy for health reasons, but died a few months later. He was buried in the Protestant cemetery . On his tomb are carved ,according to his own request ,the words: “Here lies one whose name was writ in water.” Major Works Lines in Imitation of Spenser(1814) 《仿斯宾塞》 O Solitude 《孤寂》 On First Looking into Chapman’s Home(1816) Endymion(1818) 《恩底弥翁 》 (Goddess of the moon in Greek mythology) To Autumn (His lyric masterpiece) Hyperion (Unfinished) Four Great Odes Ode on Melancholy(忧郁颂) Ode on a Grecian Urn(希腊古翁颂) Ode to Psyche(心灵颂) Ode to a Nightingale(夜莺颂) Lamia, Isabella,The Eve of St. Agnes, and 0ther poems(1820) : 《拉米娅,伊莎贝拉,圣亚尼节前夜》 美即是真 ,真即是美。 He says, the ideal life should be: “Give me books, fruit, French wine, and fine weather, and a little music out of doors, played by some one I dont know.
