• Textbook presentations of CS promote this
expectation by defining CS as the area under a
demand curve.
• This is appropriate only if (a) the good in
question has no close substitutes or
complements or (b) consumer prices for all other
goods are fixed. Such circumstances, of course,
are typical of the situations we expect to find in
textbooks , they rarely occur in the real world.
