Introduction

TheindustrializationofEuropebeganinthelateeighteenthcenturyandby1900haddramaticallytransformedtheeconomyandsocialstructure.Thisprocessbeginswith two demographic changes associated with industrialization: a populationexplosionandurbanization.A―vitalrevolution‖wastheproductofchangesinEuropeanagriculturethatallowedalargerpopulationtobefed.Afteranalyzingthesechanges,thechapterthenfocusesontheindustrializationofGreatBritain,oftencalledtheindustrialrevolution.Itstartswithhandcraftmanufactureandcottageindustry,thenexplainstheimpactofthesteamengine.Thisleadstoadiscussionofthemostimportantelementsofearlyindustrialization:theironandcoalindustries,textilemanufacturing,andtherailroads.

Thepositiveandnegativesidesoflifein thenewurbanworld existedsidebyside.ItresultedinthechangingclassstructureofEurope:thenewmiddleclassandtheurbanworkingclass.Theimpactofindustrializationonwomen,children,andthefamilywassignificant.TheindustrializationspreadacrossEurope,triggeringthe

―take-offperiod‖ofindustrialgrowthduringthemid-nineteenthcentury,followedby

the―secondindustrialrevolution‖inwhich GermanindustrialoutputbegantomatchandevenoutstripthatofGreatBritain.

OneofthemostimportantdevelopmentsinmodernEuropeanhistorywasadramaticincreaseinpopulationduringtheeighteenthandnineteenthcenturies.ThepopulationofEuropehadbeenslowlyrisingforcenturies,butseverechecks,causedbypoordietandnutrition,epidemicdisease,primitivemedicalcare,warfare,andrepressive government, had limited that growth.
