Abstract

Thedevelopmentofsustainablebiofuelsisatapivotaljuncture.Theyare

recognisedfortheirimportantroleindecarbonisingthetransportsector–

particularlyfortheirpotentialtohelpreduceaviationandshippingemissions,and

fortheircomplementaritywithEVsandenergyefficiencymeasuresinroad

transport.However,large-scaledeploymentofbiofuelsalsoraisesconcerns.The

perceivedclimatebenefitofbiofuelsdependslargelyonthecarbonintensityof

theirsupply.Thus,soundregulatoryframeworkssupportedbytransparent,

science-basedcarbonintensitycalculationswillberequiredtoattractthe

investmentsneededtoscaleupbiofuel
