1.Transcendentalism—itisaphilosophicandliterarymovementthatflourishinNewEngland,asareaction
againstrationalismandCalvinism.Itstressedintuitiveunderstandingofgodwithoutthehelpofthe
church,andadvocatedindependenceofthemind.
2.Emerson’stranscendentalism:
Theover-soul—itisanall-pervadingpowergoodness,fromwhichallthingscomeandofwhichallarea
part.Itisasupremerealityofmind,aspiritualunityofallbeingsandareligion.Itisacommunication
betweenanindividualsoulandtheuniversalover-soul.Andhestronglybelieveinthedivinityandinfinity
ofmanasanindividual,somancantotallyrelyonhimself.
3.Histowardnature:
Emersonlovesnature.Hisnatureisthegarmentoftheover-soul,symbolicandmoralbound.Natureis
notsomethingpurelyofthematter,butalivewithGod’spresence.Itexerciseahealthyandrestorative
influenceonhumanbeings.Childrencanseenaturebetterthanadult.
II.Hawthorne’sPuritanismandhisblackvisionofman:
1.Puritanism—itisthereligiousbeliefofthePuristans,whohadintendedtopurifyandsimplifythe
religiousritualofthechurchofEngland.
2.hisblackvisionofman—bytheCalvinisticconceptoforiginalsin,hebelievedthathumanbeingareevil
naturedandsinful,andthissiniseverpresentinhumanheartandwillpassonegenerationtoanother.
3.YoungGoodmanBrown—itshowsthateveryonehassomeevilsecrets.Theinnocentandnaiuml;ve
