TheMayadevelopmentreacheditsheightinwhatispresent-day
southernMexico,Guatemala,andpartsofBelize,ElSalvadorand
Hondurasbetween250and950CE.Researchersnowbelievethatthe
Mayahadapopulationof10million,whichis“muchhigher”than
previousjudgment,Canutosaid.

LiDAR(LightDetectionandRanging).AircraftwithaLiDARscanner
produced3Dmapsofthesurfacebyusinglightintheformoflaser
linkedtoaGPSsystem.

usingtraditionalarcheologicalmethods.“Nowitisnolonger
necessarytocutthroughthejungletoseewhat’sunderit,”said
Canuto.
