Muchnewdistributionisunderground.Undergrounddistributionismuchmorehiddenfromviewthanoverheadcircuits,andismorereliable.Cables,connectors,andinstallationequipmenthaveadvancedconsiderablyinthelastquarterofthe20thcentury,makingundergrounddistributioninstalla-tionsfasterandlessexpensive.

3.1 Applications

Oneofthemainapplicationsofundergroundcircuitsisforundergroundresidentialdistribution(URD),undergroundbranchesorloopssupplyingresidentialneighborhoods.Utilitiesalsouseundergroundconstructionforsubstationexitsanddropstopadmountedtransformersservingindustrialorcommercialcustomers.Otherusesarecrossings:rivercrossings,highwaycrossings,ortransmissionlinecrossings.All-undergroundconstruction—widelyusedfordecadesincities—nowappearsinmoreplaces.

Undergroundconstructionisexpensive,andcostsvarywidely.Table3.1showsextractsfromonesurveyofcostsdonebytheCEA;thetwoutilitieshighlighteddifferbyafactoroften.Themainfactorsthatin?uenceunder-groundcostsare:

?Degreeofdevelopment—Roads,driveways,sidewalks,andwaterpipes—theseandotherobstaclesslowconstructionandincreasecosts.

?Soilcondition—Rocksandfrozengroundincreaseovertimepayforcablecrews.

?Urban,suburban,orrural—Urbanconstructionismoredif?cultnotonlybecauseofconcrete,butalsobecauseoftraf?c.Ruralconstruc-tionisgenerallytheleastexpensiveperlength,butlengthsarelong.
