Seanwasshakenbyaclapofthunderbeforeheknewwhatwashappening.Thestormhadmoveddirectlyoverhis

two-storywoodenhouse.Thenheheardthesmokealarm(警报)beeping.

Seanrusheddownthestairstocheck;heopenedthedoortothebasement(地下室),andtherewastoomuch

smoketobreathe.Seanranbackupstairstocall911fromhisbedroom.“Ifeltsafebecausetheroomhadaseparate

outdoorstairway,”heexplains.Butthephonedidn’twork,andwhenhetriedtogodowntheoutdoorstairway,he

wasblockedbyawalloffire.Seanrealizedhewastrapped.

Sean’shousewasthreekilometersoffthemainroadandwassowellhiddenbytreesthatheknewcallingfor

helpwouldbefruitless.UpahillnearbylivedSean’sneighbor,David.Hewaslyinginbedwhensomethinglikea

smokealarmstruckhisears.Hejumpedoutofbed,tookhisphoneandflashlight,andheadeddownthehillside

towardthenoise.Thatwaswhenhesawtherollingheavysmoke.

Daviddialed911,andtheoperatorwarnedhimnottoenterthehouse.ButDavidsaid,“ThereisnowayIam

goingtolistentoSeanscreamanddieinthatfire.”

“Anyonethere?”Davidcalledout.Thenheheard“Help!I’mtrapped!”comingfromthesecond-floor

window.Heenteredthehouse,butsoonhadtorunbacktocatchhisbreath.Afteronemoreattemptinsidethe

house,Davidgaveupandcircledaroundback.

ThewindpartedthesmokejustenoughforhimtocatchsightofSean.Buttherewasnowaytogettohim.

Heshonetheflashlightintothewoodsandnoticedaladder.Hetookitovertothebalcony(阳台)andpulledSean

downjustasthesecondfloorofthehousefelloff.

Seanstillfeelsgratefulwhenhetellsthestory.“Iwasalonethatnight,”hesays.“ThenIheardthemost

beautifulsoundinmylife.ItwasDavid.”
