Thisstudyexaminesthecomplexrelationshipsbetweenrainfallshocks,agriculturalproductivity,andruraleconomicactivityinRajasthan,Indiaslargeststate.Usingdistrict-levelagriculturaldatafrom1990toZ015,enterprisesurveysfromZ010toZ016,andhouseholdconsumptiondatafromZ014toZ016,theresearchanalyzesthreekeyrelationships.First,positiverainfallshocksincreaseagriculturalproductivitybyapproximately7percentcomparedtonegativeshocks,withirrigationinfrastructuresignificantlymoderatingthiseffect.Second,theseweather-inducedagriculturalproductivitychangeshavesubstantialspillovereffectsonruralnon-farmenterprises,particularlythoseengagedinretailtrade.Specifically,positiverainfallshocksin-creaseenterpriserevenuesbyZ5.7percentandvalue-additionby

30.3percent,primarilythroughincreasedlocaldemandfornon-tradablegoods.Third,ruralhouseholdconsumptionrespondspositivelytofavorablerainfallconditions,withmonthlypercapitaexpendituresincreasingby6percentduringpositiverainfallshocks.Thisincreaseispredominantlydrivenbyhigherspendingonluxurygoodsratherthanessentialitems,supportingthedemand-sidechannelthroughwhichweathershocksaffectnon-farmenterpriseperformance.Thesefindingshighlightthestronginterconnectionsbetweenagriculturalconditionsandnon-farmeconomicactivityinruralareas,withimportantimplicationsforpoliciesaimedatbuildingruraleconomicresilienceinthecontextofincreasingweathervariability.
