TheDecember2011examinationwasthefirsttobeexaminedunderthenewsyllabusandincludedquestionson
topicssuchasmoneylaundering,micro-economicsandbusinessethicsthatwerepreviouslynotexaminable.
Understandably,therewasamuchwiderdivergenceinperformanceacrossthe50questionsthatinprevious
examinationsessions.However,thiswasnotentirelyduetonewmaterialappearinginthesyllabusandthe
examination.
Candidatesgenerallydealtwithquestionsonethicsverywell,exceptforascenarioquestiononconflictof
interest,whichhadapassrateof34%.Bycontrast,ascenarioaskingcandidateswhatactionsanindividual
shouldtakewhenshediscoversthathermanagerisactinginappropriatelyhadapassrateof78%.
Therewasonequestiononmicro-economicsandonequestiononmoneylaundering,andmostcandidates
struggledwiththese.
OfthetopicsthatcarryoverfromF1,therewasaverymixedperformance.Mostcandidatesansweredquestions
onTuckman’stheory,organisationalstructure,trainingandperformanceappraisalsuccessfully.
Surprisingly,arelativelystraightforwardquestiononbudgetarycontrolcauseddifficulties(seebelow),asdid
questionsonEltonMayo’sHawthorneexperiments,communications,Mendelow’sstakeholdergrid,organisational
cultureandleadership,However,itcannotbeconcludedthatcandidatesfindtheoriesmoredifficultacrossthe
board,astherewerestrongperformancesonothertheoreticalquestions.
Candidatesperformedslightlyteronscenario-basedquestionsthanshorterquestions.However,thereis
evidencethatspendinglongerontheformermayaffecttheabilityofcandidatestocompleteall50questions,asa
significantnumberofcandidatesdidnotanswerallofthequestionsonthepaper.
