    Largelanguagemodels(LLMs)haverecentlyachievedhuman-levelperformanceonarangeofprofessionalandacademicbenchmarks.Theaccessibilityofthesemodelshaslaggedbehindtheirperformance.State-of-the-artLLMsre-quirecostlyinfrastructure,areonlyaccessibleviarate-limited,geo-locked,andcensoredwebinterfaces,andlackpubliclyavailablecodeandtechnicalreports.

    Inthispaper,wetellthestoryofGPT4All,apopularopensourcerepositorythataimstodemocratizeaccesstoLLMs.WeoutlinethetechnicaldetailsoftheoriginalGPT4Allmodelfamily,aswellastheevolutionoftheGPT4Allprojectfromasinglemodelintoafullyfledgedopensourceecosystem.ItisourhopethatthispaperactsasbothatechnicaloverviewoftheoriginalGPT4AllmodelsaswellasacasestudyonthesubsequentgrowthoftheGPT4Allopensourceecosystem.
