Chongqing municipalityis located beween the TibetPlateau and themiddle and lower reaches of YangzeRiver.It is in the southeast ofSichuanbasin.Itcovers82,229squarekilometers,whichis470kmfromeasttowestand450kmfromsouthtonorth.Itscoverageisalmost3timethe total area of the other three municipalities--Beijing, Tianjin andShanghai.It is beneath Hubei province, Hunan provinceonitseast,Guizhouprovinceonitssouth,SichuanprovinceonitswestandSichuanprovinceandShaanxiprovinceonitsnorth.
Chongqingmunicipalityisthelargestmunicipalitybothinitsareaanditspopulation.Chongqingmunicipalitygoverns40counties,including19districts,17countiesand4autonomouscounties.Itswholepopulationis3.2353million.Becauseofitspopulationandarea,somebodyevensaysChongqingisthelargestcityintheworld.Butitisfartocallit acitybecause it still needs a long-term development. People say today’sChongqing is the Shanghai of 20 years ago, so you can smell oldShanghaihereinChongqing.
ChongqingisalsocalledYU.Ithasalonghistoryofmorethan3,000
years,whichisafamoushistoricandculturalcity.Chongqingbecameatreatyportintheyear1891.Chongqingfiguredimportantlyinmodern
Chinesehistory.DuringtheAnti-JapaneseWar,itwastheprovisionalcapitalofChinaundertheKuomintangrulefromNovember1937toOctober1945.Vestigesofthatperiodarestillthereinandaroundthecity.TheseincludetheRedCragVillageandZengjiayan,aswellasChiangKai-sheks(蒋介石的)mansion,GuiyuanGarden,LinyuanGarden,andthemansionofC.C.Kong,theembassiesofvariouscountriestoChina,
