Introduction Jane Eyre and Sister Carrie are two well-known novels which reveal the modern feminism through the descriptions of two working-class girls Jane Eyre and Sister Carrie. They seek their happiness in their own ways but have different fates in the end. The two characters are the examples of two different views on feminism at the turn of 20th century from Britain and American. Although there are a lot of literary critiques on the two figures, the minority of them are about the contrast of the two. Few critics realize that two unlinked class-working women like Jane Eyre?(the heroine of Jane Eyre) and Sister Carrie?(the heroine of Sister Carrie) should be connected together. Because one is created by a British female writer at the end of 19th century; the other is created by an American male naturalist at the beginning of 20th century. In fact, the two characters are the representatives of the modern female images. They both fight for independence, equality of female under the rigorous circumstances. However, there are still many differences between them. This thesis is to explore the feminism in their periods and to reveal their differences on feminism so that we can have a better understanding of the two great works and their significance in the modern times. A. Jane Eyre and Sister Carrie Jane Eyre is a story about a special and rebellious woman who has been exposed to a hostile environment, but continuously and fearlessly struggled for her ideal life. The story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit. Jane Eyre was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. Since Jane’s education in Lowwood Orphanage began, she didn’t get what she had been expecting-that was to be regarded as a common person, but just to be regarded as the same as any other girls around.
