Idioms, as we know, recognized as the essence or the crystallization of language, hold an important position in language. Especially in this information age, idioms are used frequently in daily communications, magazines and newspaper, TV programs and so on. So, a proper translation of idioms is not only helpful but also necessary in intercultural communication. However, we all know quite clearly that the English speaking countries and China are different in the way of living, standards of behavior, social customs, geographical condition, philosophy of life and natural environments; hence the contents and focus of idioms are quite different from each other. So idiom translation is a difficult job also a prevail topic. Since 1994, there have been about 127 published papers focusing on idiom translation between English and Chinese in terms of cultural distinctions and other aspects in the CNKI database. Such as the Yang Chunyan’s Cultural Difference and Translation Strategy of English and Chinese Idioms, Lin Qingkan’s The Applications of Functional Equivalence Theory in the Translation of English Idioms and so on. But there are some shortcomings. This paper will base on Nida’s Functional Equivalence as the principle to further discuss the translation of the idioms between English and Chinese. II. Definition and Characteristic Features of Idioms A. Definition of Idioms Idioms are a particular part of a language. They are usually highly specialized in meaning and closely tied to distinctive cultural features and cultural attitudes. They have been described as the crystallization of human wit and wisdom and gems of a language. English and Chinese are abundant in idioms. A comparison made between them is necessary. It is difficult to give a clear-out definition to the word?“idiom”, for it possesses several meanings which might cause us some confusion. This part offers different
