IntroductionThe process of translation is the process that the culture of the source language gets into the culture of the target language. In order to translate between two languages, it needs not only to grasp the two languages’ words, but also to understand the two cultures and the cultural differences between them. That’s to say,?“The translators must be persons who really know the cultures.”1 While translating?, with a view of the actual situation, it is required to flexibly take correct translation methods and skills, to deal with the involved cultural differences as well as possible, and to make the translation understood and accepted by the people of the target language.In 2006, Mr. Wu Youfu, an associate professor of Shanghai International Studies University, suggested giving up Chinese?“龙（lóng）” as the symbol of China because its English translation?“Dragon” always has bad imaginations in western countries2. This caused a hot discussion in our country. The translation of?“龙（lóng）” is to spread and promote the Chinese culture. Therefore it is important to pay more attention to cultural factors while translating. This thesis is to analyze the cultural differences between?“龙（lóng）” and?“Dragon”, to point out the mistakes of translating Chinese?“龙（lóng）” into?“Dragon” from the aspect of culture, and to put forward a new translation suggestion: transliterating Chinese?“龙（lóng）” into?“Loong”.II.
