Unit 5 Telephoning Useful expressions about telephoning Step 1 Brainstorming (15 minutes) a. Ask the students to write down whatever comes to their mind about telephoning (words, phrases, sentences, useful expressions, different types of telephones, etc.) Suggested answer: see A. b. Ask some students with mobile phones to speak out their cell phone numbers (or their dorm phone numbers) in English and the rest try to write down the numbers as quickly as possible. Step 2 Warm-up questions (15 minutes) How many types of phones are available today? Do you make and receive a lot of phone calls? Who do you call most often? Have you ever made any phone calls in English? Do you think it easy or difficult to understand English on the phone, why? Suggested answer: There are many types of phones available today. Such as telephone, cordless telephone, mobile phone, cell phone, little smart wireless cityphone and pager, etc. It’s difficult to understand English on the phone. Sometimes we may fail to hear exactly and couldn’t find clues from the speaker’s body language. Step 3 Pair work and presentation (25 minutes) Suppose you are to make phone calls with native speakers under the following circumstances: Situations someone wanted is not available, requiring message-leaving; you wanted to speak to Steven, but dialed the wrong number call ABC Corp. to find out prices and specifications for, say, 1000 pairs of sports shoes Situations (continued) one day an old friend of you (Jim) called and you two talked about campus life you call the Students’ Union secretary (Mary) and ask how to become a member of the Union (making an appointment) each pair choose one or more situations and create dialogs, take some notes first if you are not so sure about talking on the phone (e.g. telephone numbers, crucial information of the topic, date and place) exchanges your roles as caller and receiver and practice your dialogs Note : Do not sit face to face!
