In his novel Oliver Twist, there were a lot of descriptions about the underclass.?It attacks bitterly the nineteenth-century English Poor Law and describes the poor people’s living condition with the development of capitalism and the promulgation of the poor law. Through Oliver’s miserable life experience, (growing up in poorhouse, being controlled by Fagin to steal and so on) we have a deeply understanding of the polity and society of that time. Dickens, as a great writer emerging from the lower middle class, was bound to write a group of people that closely related to his life experience, the Victorian middle class. By faithfully recording any move and any speech of the Victorian middle class together with certain exaggeration from his imagination, he comprehensively spread out the whole Victorian middle class as well as the unity and disunity of their class status and moral values with humorous and sharp writings. One of Dickens’ most enduringly popular stories is Oliver Twist, an early work published in August,1837. Like many of his later novels, its central theme is the hardship faced by the dispossessed and those of the outside of evil society. Among all of the works of Charles Dickens, perhaps none explores the plight of those least able to defend themselves in early nineteenth century England, the orphans, as does Oliver Twist. Certainly, Dickens’ novels invariably have some commentary on the society of his day as a central point to them, but most usually only allude to the conditions that existed in the workhouses where most of the country’s orphans were assigned, and where many in fact perished.
