The available fault current is the level of current that could flow in the system in the event of a fault. It is largely a factor of the generator or transformer supplying power to the MCC and the length and size of the cabling to the MCC. The motor loads connected to the MCC also contribute to the available fault current. Today, larger transformers are being used resulting in larger available fault currents. Typically, studies are conducted to determine the available fault current. This information should be available to you or someone at your facility. It is good practice to include fault current information when requesting an MCC quote, otherwise the quoting process can be delayed until the information is obtained. The available fault current must be indicated by you when specifying an MCC because it determines the bus bar bracing (42kA or 65kA rms symmetrical) and the circuit breaker type (if circuit breakers are specified). Selecting the wrong bus bracing or circuit breaker can result in equipment loss and possible personnel injury or loss.
