[00:00.00]Part II Reading Task
[00:03.87]Text A
[00:06.02]Grant and Lee were perhaps the two greatest generals of the American Civil War.
[00:11.85]Their contrasting characters vividly capture the differences
[00:15.77]that divided the two sides to the conflict, North and South.
[00:20.23]Grant and Lee
[00:24.06]Bruce Catton
[00:26.62]When Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee met in the parlor of a modest house
[00:33.67]at Appomattox Court House, Virginia,
[00:36.45]on April 9, 1865,
[00:39.45]to work out the terms for the surrender of Lees Army of Northern Virginia,
[00:44.71]a great chapter in American life came to a close, and a great new chapter began.
[00:51.58]These men were bringing the Civil War to its virtual finish.
[00:56.92]To be sure, other armies had yet to surrender,
[01:00.47]and for a few days the fugitive Confederate government
[01:04.51]would struggle desperately and vainly,
[01:07.54]trying to find some way to go on living
[01:10.54]now that its chief support was gone.
[01:13.17]But in effect it was all over when Grant and Lee signed the papers.
[01:19.00]And the little room where they wrote out the terms
[01:21.98]was the scene of one of the poignant,
[01:24.61]dramatic contrasts in American history.
[01:27.61]They were two strong men,
[01:30.45]these oddly different generals,
[01:32.95]and they represented the strengths of two conflicting currents that,
[01:37.95]through them, had come into final collision.
[01:40.86]Back of Robert E. Lee
[01:43.61]was the notion that the old aristocratic concept
[01:47.32]might somehow survive and be dominant in American life.
[01:51.26]Lee was tidewater Virginia, and in his background were family, culture,
[01:58.85]and tradition ...
[02:00.32]the age of chivalry transplanted to a New World
[02:04.41]which was making its own legends and its own myths.
[02:08.56]He embodied a way of life that had come down through the age of knighthood
