It is demonstrated that thiols can be easily oxidized by hydroperoxides. The existence of active hydrocarbons and other nonhydro carbons in diesel has great effect on the oxidation of thiols. The addition reaction between olefin and thiol can be initiated by the hydroperoxides produced from the autooxidation of active hydrocarbons. The nonhydrocarbons, such as naphthol and alkylindoles, can be further reacted with the products and form the colored compounds with higher boiling point and higher polarity. On the basis of the re sults, the mechanism of the effect of thiols on the stability of diesel was postulated.
