APPENDIX E Project 802 In 1985, the Computer Society of the IEEE started Project 802, a drive to set standards to enable intercommunication between equipment from a variety of manufacturers. Project 802 does not seek to replace any part of the OSI model. Instead, it is a way of specifying functions of the physical layer, the data link layer, and to a lesser extent the network layer to support interconnectivity of major LAN protocols. In 1985, the Computer Society of IEEE developed Project 802. It covers the first two layers and part of the third level of the OSI model. The relationship of Project 802 to the OSI model is shown in Figure E.1. The IEEE has subdivided the data link layer into two sublayers: logical link control (LLC) and media access control (MAC).
