SincetheestablishmentofthegenusPachycon byF．Smith in 1858，manyoth-
erclosegeneraorsubgenerawereerectedduring1858to1950．H611doblerela1．(1990)list-
ed14genericorsubgenericnamesandtreatedthem asjuniorsynonymsofPachycondyla．
The living speciesofhte genusare distributed widely overthe Palaearctic， Oriental，
Australian，Ethiopian，Nearctic，andNeotropicalregions．Brown(1950，1957，1963)，
Wilson(1958)，Kempf(1960)，andYasumatsu(1962)reviesdpartofthespeciesofhte
genusrespcetively．Buttaxonomicproblemsofsomespe ciesremainunsolved
Wheeler(1930—1931)rceorded8species，lsubspecies，and 1varietyinChina．Be-
sides，3speciesweredescribedinTaiwanandTibetbyForel(1912)，Wheeler(1929)，
and Menozzi (1941)． Yasumatsu (1962)revised the Chinese speciesof f D—
myrmex and Pachycondyla， E． Pal~usmaternusForel， E denticepsW heeler， P．
ponicaEmery，P．horniForel，andP．tonkinaSan~cM arejuniorsynonymsofE．jr
pan,isMayr．Tangela1．(1982，1985，1987)reported3spceiesinTibet，Zhejiangand
Yunnan．Terayama(1990)rceorded5speciesinTaiwan，healsofoundhteworkercaste
of n 口chymesopusdarwini (Fore1)， and considered htat Belonopeha darwinivar．
