II. Catalog Description
Prerequisites: History 301. Required of all History majors, preferably in their second semester of work in the major. Introduction to the history of the historical profession, the conceptual categories of historical inquiry, the ways in which theory shapes historical research and writing.
Will focus upon case studies, significant historical works, major schools of historical interpretation and recent scholarly trends. Letter grade only (A-F).
III. Expected Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to know and do the following in four key areas:
A. Introduction to the History of the Profession
Students will be able to define theory, history and historiography and note the ways in which they are linked.
Students will be able to trace the history of the profession generally from the ancient period to the current day, with specific emphasis on the professionalization of history from the 19th century.
Students will recognize major intellectual schools, trends and debates within the profession and how those changes were connected to social developments.
Students will be able to name significant historians of the modern period and demonstrate their familiarity with a variety of theoretical perspectives historians have used to produce historical knowledge.
B. Conceptual Categories of Historical Inquiry
Students will be able to recognize, define and trace the genealogies of basic categories of historical analysis such as class, race, gender, nation, space, etc.
