Reading strategies of freshmen in Tainan Teachers’ College Background There are four skills when leaning a language that are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reading, along with listening, is sometimes viewed as a passive skill. ( Nunan, 1999). However, as other skills, reading ability is necessary in daily life, especially in academic learning. Because reading ability is related to mathematics and sciences, the greater one’s reading ability, the more he/ she learns in every academic area, the more contribution he/ she can provide to his/ her country, no wonder English people want to “ build a nation of reader”, United State announced “ reading first”, “read to read, ready to learn” and recently Bush (2001) made the importance of child’s reading achievement the major goal. Besides, as we inspect the education, for hundred years, being literate has been the mark of the education (Nunan, 1999). However, according to Nunan (1999) “reading involves highly complex cognition processing operations.” not every individual learns how to read. For these reasons, nowadays many countries all over the world spent a lot of money, time, and effort in reading education, especially in teaching reading. According to the questionnaire investigating of the relationship between motivation, strategies and class atmosphere in teacher college freshmen English course in Tainan, the college students would like to improve their language four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, how to improve their four skills? How to make their learning more effective, more interesting? The introduction of the learning strategies may be the answer. According to Neil (1999), reading is an essential skill for English as a second/ foreign language (ESL/ EFL) students; and for many, reading is the most important skill to master.
