Introduction The group of special concretes includes self-compacting concretes and fibre concretes. The concretes are now increasingly often used in building practice. Self-compacting concrete is used for, among other things, tunnel and reservoir walls, high-rise building skeletons and prefabricated units, including elements subjected to repeated dynamic loads (e.g. bridge top slabs) [1,2,7]. Fibre concrete is used for road and airport pavements, industrial floors, founda- tions for machines and other elements exposed to repeated dynamic and seismic loads [3,4,5]. It has been shown that the failure of ordinary and high-strength concretes under compres- sion proceeds in three stages [6-9]. It would be interesting to know how the failure of self- compacting concrete and fibre concrete proceeds under such loading. The aim of this research was to investigate the failure of self-compacting concretes made using two different superplasticizers, and two fibre concretes differing in their steel fibre con- tent. The levels of cracking initiating stress  and critical stress  , as a function of compres- i cr sive stress were determined and compared with the results obtained for selected ordinary and high-strength concretes. It is essential to know the above parameters since, as mentioned above, self-compacting and fibre concretes find ever wider application in building practice and the levels of  and  have a direct bearing on the durability and service of structural i cr components made of special concretes, especially when subjected
