This species was first discovered in 1849 and further finds soon followed, so that by 1920 the grass had been recorded from sites scattered throughout the southern third of England. The rapid spread of the plant was characteristic of an introduced species, but it is now known that this is not the case. Although interrupted brome is very different from others of its genus, it almost certainly arose in the 19th century as a new species through a major and sudden genetic change. 　　As a native species, interrupted brome is endemic to England and formerly occurred in south-central and south-east England from east Kent and north Somerset to south Lincolnshire. However, it is believed to be extinct in the wild, having last been seen in Cambridgeshire in 1972. Its decline was probably due to the use of improved seed-cleaning methods.
