Over the past few years we have seen the major Dollar Store chains increase their merchandising efforts and support for national brands and expand their price points and promotions beyond $1 items. They want to be more of a destination trip and drive larger baskets in the process. Dollar General has invested in creating a pretty good web site where they have strong focus on pets. And “me-too” store brands. And easy meals with recipe ideas containing their own store brands as well as branded products This has definitely been a big year for store closings as some retailers look to weed-out poor performers and others, like Circuit City and Linens ‘n Things, shut their doors completely. The latter making a bold move to on-line retailing. Think about the impact these closings have on smaller stores who might have been using these stores as anchor’s to attract shoppers. And the shake-up has the 2nd largest U.S. Mall owner filing for bankruptcy. Lot’s of people have tried to make it in the restaurant business and it is normal to see a large number of openings and closings in this sector. What is unusual this year is that the rate of closings is outpacing the rate of openings. A great illustration of this are these next two slides.. Here we are looking at same store sales in 2007; almost ? of these operators including many from the casual dining sector as well as some from the upper end such as Mortons for example – were registering good same store gains. Fast forward to a year later, when almost every one, except 3 – are declining, and of those 3, 2 are just slight gains. Store closings will be a risk to some and an opportunity for others: Big opportunity for retailers to grab some cheap property to expand store count in existing or new markets (Costco mentioned they were using this year as a year to do just that).
