Innite State Mo del Checking using Partial Evaluation and Abstract Interpretation Michael Leuschel Department of Electronics and Computer Science University of Southampton Southampton SO BJ Part Previous Track Record Logic programming originated from the discovery that a subset of predicate logic could b e given a pro cedural interpretation which was rst emb o died in the programming language Prolog The unique features of logic programming make it app ealing for nu merous applications in articial intelligence computeraided verication databases and op erations research as well as to explore parallel and concurrent computing The last two decades have witnessed substantial developments not the least of which originated in the UK in this eld from its foundation to implementation applications and the exploration of new language designs Program sp ecialisation also called partial evaluation is an automatic to ol for program optimisation similar in concept to but in several ways stronger than highly optimising compilers The central idea is to sp ecialise a given source program for a particular application domain This is mostly done by a wellautomated application of parts of the Burstall and Darlington unfoldfold transformation framework Pro gram sp ecialisation encompasses traditional compiler optimisation techniques but uses more aggressive transformations yielding b oth much greater sp eedups and more di culty in controlling the transformation pro cess Imp ortant successful applications include computer graphics neural networks numerical mathematics databases exp ert systems discrete simulation scientic computing and language pro cessors
