Social Function and Origin of Euphemism in English INTRODUCTION Euphemism has existed for a long time and is widely used in languages. Every language has its own euphemism, so does English. In fact, euphemism is a common linguistic phenomenon in world culture. During the communication, due to some certain restriction of behavior and morality, people tend to use euphemism which makes the harsh, indelicate words sound tactful and pleasant. The use of euphemism is a common phenomenon in western culture, and it truly reflects the life and values of English people and their history. It is no wonder that the study of English euphemism can help us understand the western culture and promote the relationship with English-speaking countries because euphemism is widely used in international negotiations. So it is of great importance for us to study English euphemism, including its origin, its communicative function, etc. Euphemism is a product of social and cultural environment. The earliest English euphemism originated from religion or admires and dread of gods which is “taboo”. The word “taboo” comes from Togan, a kind of Polynesian. It indicates evasive language or action. (Seeing the Social Communicative Function of Euphemism From Psychological Factor [J]. 2005.3 P146). In order to find a solution to avoid taboos, euphemisms came into being and gradually played important roles in language and culture. The functions of English euphemism divided into five parts by most of the researchers. They are taboo, politeness, concealing, positive and praising which beautify languages and make people live harmonious. ChapterⅠDEFINITIONS OF ENGLISH EUPHEMISM Euphemism is a universal linguistic phenomenon. Nearly in every language, there are some disgusting words, which make people feel embarrassed. In the process of communication, the unsuitable or too direct words will make people feel uncomfortable, even angry. So there is a great need for us to use a tactful way to express emotion,
