NewArchitecturesSupportin Linux3.x Baohua@kernel.org Architectures Support 3.1:OpenRISCisanOpenSourceCPUfromtheOpenCoresprojectthatbringstothe worldofhardwareallthesameadvantagesthatOpenSourcesowarehasknownfor solong.Theaimoftheprojectistocreatefreeandopensourcecompungplaorms availableundertheGNU(L)GPLlicense,andasetoffree,opensource implementaonsofthearchitectureandopensourcesowaredevelopmenttools, libraries,operangsystemsandapplicaons.Theimplementaonmergedinthis releaseisthe32bitOpenRISC1000family(or1k). 3.2:TheQualcommsHexagonprocessorisageneralpurposedigitalsignalprocessor designedforhighperformanceandlowpoweracrossawidevarietyofapplicaons.It mergesthenumericsupport,parallelism,andwidecomputaonengineofaDSP, withtheadvancedsystemarchitectureofamodernmicroprocessor. 3.3:ThefamilyofarchitecturesthatrunonLinuxhasgotevenbiggerwiththe addionofsupportfortheTexasInstrumentsC6X.Thisarchitecturesupports membersoftheTexasInstrumentsfamilyofC64xsingleandmulcoreDSPs.The mulcoreDSPsdonotsupportcachecoherancy,soarenotsuitableforSMP.Also, thesearenommuprocessors.ThiscorearchitectureisVLIWwithaninstruconset opmizedforDSPapplicaons. Architectures Support(Cont.) 3.7:AtypicalLinuxdistribuonforx86PCcomputerscanbootandworkinhundredsof diﬀerentPC(diﬀerentCPUvendor,diﬀerentGPUmodels,diﬀerentmotherboardsand chipsets,etc)usingasingledistribuoninstallmedia.Thisabilitytobeabletobootin diﬀerenthardwareconﬁguraonsistakenasagiveninthePCworld.However,itdidntexist intheLinuxARMworld.TheARMecosystemhashistoricallybeendrivenbytheembedded world,wherehardwareenumeraonisntevenpossibleinmanycases,soeachARMkernel imagewastargetedforaspeciﬁcembeddedhardwaretarget.ItcouldntbootinotherARM systems.Inthisrelease,theLinuxARMimplementaonhasaddedmulplaormsupport theabilitytobuildasingleARMkernelimagethatisabletobootmulplehardware.T
