SURFACE SCIENCE 30 (1972) 379-387 0 North-Holland Publishing Co. REACTION OF NITRIC OXIDE WITH A GRAPHITE SURFACE, AND THE ADSORPTIVE PROPERTIES OF THE RESULTANT SURFACE C. E. BROWN and P. G. HALL Department of Chemistry, The University of Exeter, Stocker Road, Exeter, Devon.. England Received 10 January 1972 Nitric oxide does not react appreciably with a highly graphitized carbon black at temper- atures up to 670 K, but at this temperature NO reacts readily with ungraphitized carbon to produce surface carbon-oxygen complexes. This modification is manifested by the increasingly hydrophilic nature of the surface, and by an increase in the isosteric heats of adsorption for physically adsorbed gases which have an appreciable quadrupole moment. Low temperature adsorption of NO on the surface modified by reaction with NO shows a hysteresis effect which is associated with interaction of the NO with surface oxygen complexes. Comparison plots of amounts of gases adsorbed at the same pressures on the modified and unmodified surface provide information about the area presented by the modified surface after completion of the monolayer. An adsorption isotherm of nitrogen on the modified surface partially covered with preadsorbed nitric oxide is used to test the nature of the surface formed by this strongly adsorbed species. 1. Introduction Previous studiesl) have shown NO to be physically ads
