Course Name: Advanced Listening II As taught in: Spring 2012 Level Juniors majoring English Instructor 张舒 (Tony Zhang) Course Meeting Times Lectures: 2 sessions / week, 45 min / session Office Hours: 1 hour/ week (12:50-1:50 p.m. at #2404 on Wednesdays) Prerequisites This course is aimed at students with 9000+ vocabulary, a certain amount of listening strategies and basic understandings on English news patterns, literature, linguistics as well as western cultures. Goals This course has several related goals: Drill and Provide further listening strategies on English news listening Help students feel justifiably confident of their ability to comprehend a variety of English listening texts that allow them to accomplish useful goals. Position students so that they can compete for TEM8, BEC, TOEFL, IELTS etc. and excel in other courses such as Interpretation. Course Requirements: Attendance Assignments 1. You are expected to attend all classes since a significant portion of the listening guidance for this course will be presented only in lecture, so students are expected to regularly attend lectures. Unexcused absences will automatically lower your grade. 2. You should finish the home listening assignments carefully, and two of them will be scored. They must be submitted when you come to class—not a few days or an hour later. Unless you have a convincing excuse, any late paper will lower your grade. The dates for submitting the homework will be reconfirmed to the class before the deadline. 3. Each week, there will be a warming-up task at the beginning of the course. The students are required to answer a couple of questions based on some video clips, two for each week following a random order. The video clips will be played twice. 4. The audio files covered in the class are an integral part of the course.
