A Message from the Chair…
A Hero at 30,000 feet
What should have been a routine flight from San Diego to Miami-was anything but! Dr.
Lorena Martin, a recent graduate from the doctoral program in Kinesiology and Sport
Sciences, was taking a holiday break from her first post-doctoral position at the University of
California, San Diego. She was coming to visit her parents for the Christmas holidays on
Flight 1042 direct for Miami.
Lorena was all but asleep in the aisle seat of row 25 in what seemed
like an ordinary flight when things suddenly changed! A female
passenger started screaming, “He’s “He’s dying!”
dying!” “He’s dead!” Hearing her
screams, other alarmed passengers figured -FEMALE PASSENGER ABOARD
FLIGHT 1042
something was very wrong and suddenly
half the plane was screaming in fear.
Lorena saw the woman who was screaming start shaking the male
passenger next to her in the aisle seat of row 24. He did not move!
Without hesitation Lorena stood up and went to help the passenger
who sat listless in his seat. The man was too large for Lorena to pick
up alone, so she asked for help, and with the assistance of another
passenger, they were able to get the passenger on the floor of the
cabin. Lorena checked for a pulse and i
