Course Overview
In English 394 you will learn how to write clear persuasive documents while functioning as an effective
member of a team. Because the class structure is organized around small student workgroups, you will
become an effective writer and editor through a process of peer revision. The choice of class materials and
resources will expose you to activities that encourage critical analysis while building your knowledge of
English grammar and usage.
Each week you will complete a number of readings and class assignments designed to expose to you
documents and rhetorical strategies of many different kinds. Your readings and class materials will often
provide concrete instructions and templates that suggest how to create various business documents.
However, since business needs are constantly changing, you will need to be an adaptable writer and reader
of all kinds of documents. Ideally, by the end of this course, you will approach each writing task as an
exercise in information design and presentation.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
• Write an effective business document, designing an “architecture” of information that peer group
readers find comprehensive and readable.
• Write fluently and grammatically in a style appropriate to the document requested.
• Construct valid and persuasive arguments appropriate to the audience and purpose of the document
• Gather research information in libraries, on the Internet, or through any other source for print or
multimedia
